Greek Village ECohousing

Forming Communities
Peloponnesos, Greece

We are an international group creating the first authentic multigenerational cohousing community in Greece!

Who we are: multinational, diverse, friendly, skilled, experienced, fun, people who want connection with community and with the land.

We are a diverse, multigenerational, and multinational group.  We have land with a breathtaking view, in a low mountain and agricultural area that keeps us cooler in the summer, where we can plant and cook delicious meals together in our Common House.  We are very close to a major city with lots of services and 30 minutes from a picture postcard seaside village and beaches.

A few of us have significant experience living in cohousing and eco villages, and this can help lay a strong foundation for a healthy community.  A few others are Greek or have significant experience living in Greece, and they will be a great bridge to the wider community.  Still others are coming from all walks of life, with skills and talents.  We all value closer connection with neighbors and with the land.

Where we are:  Physical Location- Peloponnesus

We chose the gorgeous Peloponnesus peninsula because it has it all- beaches, snowcapped mountain ranges, vineyards and olive groves, cozy mountain villages, modern cities, seaside villages, and ancient ruins.  You could spend a lifetime exploring, and it remains authentically Greek as it is relatively free from throngs of tourists.  From Peloponnesus, you can easily drive to Athens and to Europe without the need to fly.

Formation Development Stage:  Design and Build Stage- The Fun Part!!!

We have recently returned from a property search and found property beyond anything we could have imagined.  We have acquired the property and are now ready to have a blast designing our village together to reflect our cohousing mission and commitment to living sustainably.  We strive to use best practices and utilize cohousing professionals and eco village professionals and well as research and learn from decades of Danish and U.S. experience and empirical data pointing to particular design and social features that ensure community longevity and success.

Our Vision:

Our community prioritizes traditional cohousing values and design as articulated in Charles Durret and Katie McCamant seminal book on Cohousing- design for connection and for sustainable living.  Our community is surrounded by natural beauty and will reflect our value to live more connected lives supporting multiple generations and each other, and living lightly on the land.

We are in the mountains and agricultural region and envision a farm to table culture with permaculture edible landscape.  We are looking forward to cooking together with fruits and vegetables from our gardens and orchards.  Although we are emersed in nature and on hiking trails, we are very close driving distance to a major city with all the services we could want, and we are 30 quick minutes to a seaside village and to beaches.  Our village will also be within a larger community- a “Wellness and Lifestyle Community” that spans an entire mountain and valley.  This larger community will be developed over 20 years and will include small agricultural micro business such as an olive mill, as well as several resort amenities such as a spa.

Our cohousing ecovillage aesthetic will be traditional local stone mirroring nature and the nearby village architecture.  We plan to balance our strong desire for eco features such as photovoltaic cells and eco-friendly sewage and water systems with the need to initially spend to support multigenerational needs such as nurturing spaces for children, strong internet for remote workers, and aging in place features.

We envision generous shared outdoor spaces for an active life lived outdoors, and we look forward to community celebrations, music and folks dancing, swimming and kayaking, and hiking and exploring all that Greece has to offer.  We envision the Greek members of our multinational community as a bridge to integration with the wider Greek community.

Who we seek to join us:  Those who value community and want to relocate their primary residence to Greece.

Our home prices and floorplans will likely appeal primarily to those seeking strong community and middle income housing rather than those seeking high end luxury or low cost housing.  Our non-European members will utilize one of several permanent residency options: the “financially independent visa,” the investor visa, the remote worker or digital nomad visa, or the most popular and most frequently used property ownership visa, the Greek Golden Visa.  The latter is Europe’s lowest cost permanent residency through property ownership program, providing permanent and all of its benefits for the entire family for a purchase of a property totaling €250,000 or more.  This amount is the backbone of what most will need to have, although Europeans, especially Greeks, will also be able to buy less expensive smaller units roughly between €150,000 and €250,000.  Greek banks do not generally provide mortgages.
