Interested in learning more about permaculture but don’t have any hands-on experience? Have friends or family who want to know what it is you do on your eco-village or urban farm?

Oregon State University is offering a free MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) called Intro to Permaculture, running from May 2 through May 27. It’s open to anyone, anywhere – you don’t have to be a student or live anywhere near OSU to participate.

Just go to the OSU website to lean more about it and enroll. It takes a few minutes to sign up, and the entire course involves 12 to 16 hours of participation. Here are some of the details:

“In this four-week course, you will learn about the process, ethics and principles of permaculture design. This method of landscape planning can be applied to any setting…. The course is taught by Andrew Millison, who has been involved in Permaculture practice, design and education for 20 years, and is an instructor in the Horticulture Department at OSU and founder of Permaculture Design International (PDI).”

OSU calls it “a high-production, online educational experience that includes video, images, animation, text, resource lists, links, and interactive activities. When students complete all of the interactive assignments and content quizzes, they will receive a ‘digital badge’ which verifies their participation.”

It sounds like a great opportunity to deepen our understanding of permaculture principles. Even those of us who have some hands-on experience may find it useful to revisit them in an educational setting. Please leave a comment below if you intend to participate, and we can share some of our takeaways from the class in future posts!
